Honoring Hispanic Heritage: A Month of Culture, Community, and Connection
Every year, from September 15th to October 15, the United Sates celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the extensive histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. This month-long celebration highlights the achievements of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Why September 15th?
The celebration starts on September 15, which signifies the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile honor their respective independence days shortly afterward, on September 16th and 18th.
What Does the Month Celebrate?
Hispanic Heritage Month is about more than the dates on the calendar, it's also a chance to:
Learn and share culture: Look for opportunities to participate in and share the cultural aspects of Hispanic art, music, literature, and traditions also to learn more about important individuals such as Frida Kahlo, César Chávez, and Sonia Sotomayor.
Enjoy food and traditions: If possible, eat or offer traditional foods, including tamales, pupusas, empanadas, and arepas, as well as attend local cultural festivals, events, or celebrations.
Recognize contributions: Honor the lasting impact of Hispanic Americans in fields like education, politics, science, the arts, and business.
Support communities: Encourage Hispanic-owned businesses and organizations and to take part in activities that lift up the voices of Hispanic contributors.
Why it Matters
Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate diversity, history, and inclusion. Educating ourselves about Hispanic culture, celebrating Hispanic culture and engaging with the Hispanic community is all part of the process of acknowledging the contributions of Hispanic Americans to our nation and the heritage they add to our culture. It's a time to reflect, be grateful, and to celebrate a culture that continues to enhance our lives.
